WSRP Project

Religion as a Resource for Healing for ‘Women of Faith’ Survivors of Gender-Based Violence in South Africa 

The project will examine how women of faith in faith-based shelters for abused women utilize religious rituals, and beliefs to recover from trauma and rebuild their sense of identity. The project highlights the centrality of religion in their recovery journeys.

Profile

Fungai Chirongoma is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stellenbosch University and a guest Lecturer in the Department for the Study of Religions at the University of Cape Town. 

Her research explores the intersection of religion, gender, and social justice in African contexts. Prof. Chirongoma teaches across a broad range of courses including African Indigenous Religion, Religion and Society, Religion and Gender, and Christianity in Africa.
