Sanctity and Sexuality: The Dispute Over the Most Exalted Female Personage in Medieval Islam

The project documents the tension between gender and sanctity in the idealization of two Muslim religious figures. The conflict between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims over the ideal female religious figures reveals distinct attitudes toward the potential sanctity of women in Islam.
