Empire of Civility: Civilization and the Iroquois,1750-1850

A book-length study of several Iroquois communities in central and western New York. A work of both social and cultural history, it analyzes continuities and changes in Iroquois gender discourse and practices in light of the creation on the 'civilization' concept during the Enlightenment and the 'civilizing' practices of missionaries and government officials.
